3 Common Construction Materials in the Philippines

House construction materials in the Philippines are chosen by home builders through the following factors: versatility, strength, and affordability. It’s vital to use materials suitable and durable to our country’s climate, while also meeting your aesthetic requirements without compromising your safety. Here, we’ve listed some of the most common materials used to make houses that you may also consider.

WOOD

Mountains and forests in the Philippines have different kinds of wood. It’s a natural resource that could be acquired effortlessly – making the house construction overall process more affordable. Experts emphasize that its lightweight and easy-to-use features introduce homeowners to endless possibilities when it comes to building and designing. In line with this, wood can also be combined with other house construction materials such as metals and bricks to achieve a more industrial look. It is also the perfect choice for those who want to be one with nature at all times.

CONCRETE

Concrete is one of the go-to house construction materials of homeowners in the Philippines. Known for its durability, insulation properties, and affordability, most structures found in the country (residential, industrial, and commercial) are made of concrete. It is highly flexible and can be formed into multiple shapes and sizes. Moreover, concrete is commonly used for the creation of walls and other structural parts of a house because its main purpose is to stabilize structures. Experts even use reinforced concrete beams and columns to strengthen an entire home and protect it against natural calamities.

STEEL

Whether as a decorative element or a support structure, steel is trusted by homebuilders. It is marked by its flexibility and strength – the basic foundation for residential structures and even for massive buildings like skyscrapers. In the Philippines, steel is mostly used to support walls, roofs, and the base of structures. For instance, according to homebuilders, steel beams are welded together into columns that form trusses. When used as a roof design, it helps protect the home from strong winds and keeps the roof in place.

These house construction materials become a necessity in projects in the Philippines, and you may also use them to your advantage. Just keep in mind that a good structural design is one that uses different kinds of reinforcements to create a cohesive and stable structure, which means you can combine all of them and make the most out of it. Discuss it with your trusted home builder today!

Why Septic Tank Siphoning Is Important?

Understanding How Your Septic Tank Works

Owners of residential houses, commercial buildings, and industrial establishments often call Malabanan, the top provider of septic tanks in the Philippines, for them to install one. Septic tanks, also known as pozo negro, are underground watertight structures used to collect wastewater coming from bathrooms, kitchen drains, laundry, factories and such. They are commonly used in rural areas without centralized sewer systems. Aside from collecting wastewater, a pozo negro also uses a combination of nature and proven technology to execute effective wastewater treatment. This is how a typical pozo negro works:
  1. All wastewater that goes into the drains, flushes, and pipes are collected through the main drainage pipe that connects the septic tank to other fixture units.
  2. The underground pozo negro then allows solids included in the wastewater to settle down to the bottom forming sludge, while the oil, grease, and water float to the top as scum.
  3. With the naturally-occurring bacteria existing in the pozo negro, it digests organic matter and stores solids at the bottom while discharging the treated wastewater (effluent) into the drain field area.
  4. The drain field is a shallow but covered excavation filled with unsaturated soil. The effluent percolates into the soil, which then naturally removes the harmful coliform bacteria and viruses it contains then functions as a fertilizer.

The Importance of Regularly SIphoning Your Septic Tank

Although a septic tank is an underground watertight structure that is capable of storing large amounts of wastewater, it still can be full especially due to the lack of regular siphoning and maintenance. As per Malabanan, accumulated solids of septic tanks pile up over time leaving a little or no space at all for upcoming wastewater and its treatment. Thus, issues such as pooling of water, slow drains, pressured pipes, and smelly pozo negro may arise. To prevent these situations, regular maintenance and siphoning is advised.

Malabanan states that a heavy-duty electric water pump carries out siphoning by drawing off all the wastewater and solids from a septic tank going through high-end tubes and containers attached to a certain siphoning truck. This empties the pozo negro and the collected wastewater is then transferred to Malabanan’s treatment site to be disposed of properly. Depending on the size and state of the pozo negro, siphoning must be done annually or every two years.

On the other hand, maintenance services from Malabanan include septic tank inspection, quick repairs, pipe installation, and preventive measures. To ensure that a septic tank performs at its peak efficiency, it is advised to get these services every six months.
